• A Decade Later, Why Piku Still Hurts

The tragedy of Piku is that in the effort to raise a feminist daughter, Bhashkor inadvertently created a woman who cannot separate agency from obligation. She has the freedom to walk away, but no inner permission to exercise it.

Even after a decade, Piku’s wound still refuses closure. Earlier this month, it saw a celebratory return to the Indian theatres. Set against the backdrop of urban dislocation, the film reveals how care, entwined with modern anxieties around health and autonomy, becomes both a struggle and an act of love. Here, endurance takes centre stage and heroism lies not in transcendence but in the raw, repetitive acts of showing up.

Piku isn’t a film that presents itself with stillness or ease, within moments we’re dropped steadfast into its central conflict, the three Cs of Piku: chaos, conflict, and constipation. In the Banerji household, the hullabaloo is ambient and relentless. It’s not just about food or medicine, it’s about the rituals around them, the way every small bodily need is magnified into an existential crisis. Everything is always urgent and bodily, never philosophical or resolved. And yet, it is through this visceral lens that the film dissects something much softer: a daughter’s slow, exhausted unravelling.

    Intimacy As A Chore

For a film named after its protagonist, Piku (Deepika Padukone) rarely occupies the foreground of her own life. Her personhood is tethered to her father’s every whim, she is as entangled with Bhashkor (Amitabh Bachchan) as much as she is estranged from herself. There is something devastating in how she moves through the world: a woman raised to be entirely self-sufficient, trained to mother herself, to anticipate her needs as efficiently as she meets others’. She yearns for intimacy yet treats it like a function to be met, a chore to be checked off: necessary, transactional, solvable. The tragedy of Piku is that in the effort to raise a feminist daughter, Bhashkor inadvertently created a woman who cannot separate agency from obligation. She has the freedom to walk away, but no inner permission to exercise it.

After the success of Animal, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has been preparing for his next big project, Spirit, starring Prabhas in the lead.

Deepika Padukone Dropped From Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit Over "Unprofessional" Behaviour: Report

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit stars Prabhas in the lead.

Deepika Padukone is reportedly no longer part of the project.

Concerns over remuneration and unprofessional behavior led to her exit.

After the success of Animal, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has been preparing for his next big project, Spirit, starring Prabhas in the lead.

However, reports now suggest that Deepika Padukone, who was earlier said to be part of the film, is no longer a part of the project.

According to Filmfare, the actress was allegedly dropped from Spirit due to disagreements over remuneration and reported “unprofessional” behaviour.

A source close to the development told Bollywood Hungama, “Sandeep Reddy Vanga got the shock of his life when Deepika Padukone refused to shoot for more than 6 hours a day for Spirit. That’s not all, the actress, via her agency, also started to demand an amendment to the contract. Their point of contention was simple – if the shoot extends beyond 100 days, Deepika will have to be paid extra for every single day of shoot beyond the commitment on paper.”

Following these alleged concerns, the director and his team are said to be looking for a replacement. An official statement from the makers, however, is still awaited.

The film has already faced multiple delays – initially due to Deepika’s pregnancy and childbirth, and later owing to Prabhas’ injury and other film commitments. This has led to speculation that Spirit may not go on floors anytime soon, with some reports suggesting it might be pushed to next year.

Despite the delays, producer Bhushan Kumar recently stated in an interview that Spirit is expected to begin shooting in the next two to three months. After wrapping up Spirit, Sandeep Reddy Vanga will reportedly begin work on Animal Park, the sequel to Animal.

  • Mother’s Day 2025: A Blockbuster Frame Featuring Salman Khan With “Best Mothers” Salma And Helen

Salman Khan shared a Mother’s Day post on Sunday, thanking his father Salim Khan “for the best mothers in the world”.

Sharing a photo with both his mothers, Salma Khan and Helen, the actor wrote on Instagram, “Thank u dad for the best mothers in the world. To the most beautiful women in my world. Happy Mother’s Day.”

Meanwhile, Salman recently came under criticism for tweeting about the India-Pakistan ceasefire, while staying silent on Operation Sindoor

In his now-deleted tweet, Salman wrote, “Thank God for the ceasefire….” However, the post drew criticism from some users who questioned why the actor had not commented on Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army’s recent precision strikes on terror sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

One user asked, “No tweets about Operation Sindoor. Why?” Another wrote, “You didn’t say anything about India’s Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.”

Following the backlash, Salman deleted the tweet. A fan, however, came to his defence, stating, “Just after his tweet, the news came that Pakistan violated the ceasefire. So he deleted that tweet. Now tell me what is Salman Khan’s mistake here?”

The ceasefire, which had been agreed upon by both countries’ military officials, was reportedly violated by Pakistan just hours after the announcement.

Salman Khan had earlier reacted to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed 26 lives, mostly civilians and tourists. At the time, he had tweeted: “Kashmir, heaven on planet earth, turning into hell. Innocent people being targeted, my heart goes out to their families. Ek bhi innocent ko marna puri kainath ko marne ke barabar hai (Killing one innocent person is similar to killing the entire universe).”
